150 acres returned to the sea, river - Levee removal begins south of city
A decade after being purchased by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), about 150 acres along Port Susan Bay are getting a facelift.
They’re going for the vintage look — turn of the century vintage.
To accomplish this, TNC hired Bellevue’s Northwest Construction to remove 1.4 miles of dike that was built by area farmer Menno Groeneveld in the 1950s. Full Story
Three-year sentence for Camano man
Attacked mom
Levon Rooney, 28, of Camano Island, will spend nearly three years in prison for attacking his mother.
Rooney pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree assault in connection with the December incident, and was sentenced last week. Full Story
Crime rates down statewide
Up in Island Co.
Crime rates across the state were down in 2011, with one exception.
There was a 2.9 percent increase in the number of assaults against law enforcement officers.
No officers, however, were killed in the line of duty. Full Story

Emerson remains at odds with county on wetland reports

Alvin M. “Bill” Sandberg of Stanwood and formerly of Camano Island, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2012, surrounded by his family. He had faced a long and courageous battle against mesothelioma cancer.
